From The Commanding Officer
The Wolf gram in the past has served a need for general communication within the squadron. We are large in size and spread out with nine detachments in addition to the home base. It will continue to serve that need. However, since so many of our friends, relatives, and ex-shipmates also read it, we are attempting to make it more understanding to one who is not actually on the scene. Accordingly, we have noted each detachment's geographical location and are including a rough map of the Mekong Delta in order to give the reader some idea of the detachment and home base locations. The "in" jokes and foolishness will persist and rightfully so; it's that kind of an informal publication, but we expect to see it evolve during the next few issues with more information about the detachments and departments' employment.
For the information of our friends and relatives back home I would like to report my continued esteem for the officers and men of HA(L)-3. I demand much from them, this miserable war demands much from them, their very existence in this environment demands much from them. There aren't any bands and parades, and the long days fuse into longer weeks and months. But somehow they keep going, apparently buoyed by the knowledge that they are needed. As the United States withdraws it's ground forces from Vietnam, the remaining air and supporting units take on an even more important role. After observing these men for the past three months, I have no reservations regarding their ability to get the job done. You can all be proud of the part HA(L)-3 is playing.
M.J.Twite, Jr
Captain, U.S. Navy
Safety
From the desk of Safety:
Our tiring Safety Officer, LCDR Dennis LEE, has a combat hardened veteran to assist with all the mounds of paper that YN2 RM FANT insists upon piling on the desk. LTJG PJ CRONK has turned in his guns, departed detachment three, and taken up pen and spyglass to carry on the sleuthing for the honorable safety empire.
The goal of everyone here is to return home after a fruitful tour, swing the same appendages we were blessed with when we arrived in Vietnam. The greatest insurance program in which we can invest is SAFETY if we truly hope to attain our goal. Think safe, be safe, do safe for your own sake. And remember, whatever you do, the friendly safety officer is watching!
Detachment One
(Nam Can)
After some delay which was brought about by a blue ribbon investigating committee, DAR Censors and some faulty presses, the Wolfgram's message from the hard charging and hard hitting gang at Det One will hopefully be published this time. At this time I will reprint the text of out last Wolf gram input and at the end bring everyone up to date with current changes and actions.
April Showers may have brought May flowers to you in the States, but Southeast Asia's monsoons brought new goons (sorry about the rhyme) to Det One. With the change in weather, Det One also had a change in OinC and several new det pilots and crewmen. CDR CARSON returned to Binh Thuy to take over the reigns as Maintenance Officer. He did an outstanding job with his hard charging commandos and we wish him well in his new assignment. Before departing, CDR CARSON worked around the clock to break in his replacement, CDR SCHMITT, who came to us after serving his time in Binh Thuy as Admin Officer.
Other new faces on the Det One scene include LTJG Terry "Beast" WALDBEESSER, LTJG Mike "Suds" SULDO, and the latest in the "Sot" family LTJG Richard LAMBERT. "Beast" came to us right from the world while "Suds" and "Sot the third", both left good jobs in Binh Thuy to become a part of Number One -- Det One. New, but experienced gunners were two transfers from Det Eight, "The Good Humor Man" ADJ3 Mike TIMOTHY, and ADJ3 George DECKER. PR2 Charles ORR's bright future at Det One was terminated or at least delayed by a SEAL insertion at Seafloat in which he suffered a fractured elbow. Best wishes for a speedy recovery.
Additional losses to the detachment included Gary "Sot Sr." WRIGHT, who left the sampans and hooches behind to win the hearts and minds of the natives associated with HC-1. "Sot JR" Bill "Mac" McAMY's services were requested in Binh Thuy, where he will spread the good word of Det One's triumphs and take over the desk of Aircrew Training and OOD Watches. It might appear to the innocent reader that the "Sot" family was forced into extinction but after serving three tours in Binh Thuy, many hours in the "O" club and some time in the Ben Xe Moi/ Can Tho area, "Sot the Third" shows some promise of upholding the good family name. Best of luck and successes go to ADJ3 SLUNAKER and AMS3 HARBAUGH, who recently departed with orders to the World.
Now for some word about the old standbys of Det One. LCDR Bill ROY, Assistant OinC, was finally convinced to wear his combat green fatigues vice his khakis. Little does anyone know that he irrepairably ripped his khakis while racing to choose the ship's (USS Washoe County) movie. LTJG Russ "Katfish" HALLAUER recently made FTL (Fire Team Leader) and is now busy training everyone. He is also the senior JG on board and that automatically makes him the CO of the TOQ (Troop Officers Quarters of the ship). "Katfish" also has the unique distinction of leading a very aggressive all JG fire team with Rick LAMBERT as his copilot, who incidentally gave Russ a gun cut while low leveling a SEAL insertion under fire. The wing ship is piloted by Ray WIKSTROM who just made AHAC (Attack Helicopter Aircraft Commander). Ray's voice was noted to rise several octaves when he observed a chip detector light on his panel but he landed safely at Ben Keo to remove the metal chip and continue flying. Terry WALDBEESSER's fact finding thirst for complete results of our missions was rewarded by his unanimous selection as the Det's AIO (Air Intelligence Officer). The "heavy, heavy" Light Fire Team consists of CDR SCHMITT (our fearless leader may lose some extra poundage now that he has left his super patio and recovery room to those remaining at Binh Thuy, but the ship's cook may have other ideas) and LCDR ROY. LTJG Jack LUDWIG returns to us after being TAD to Det Nine and seeing Cambodia. He must have been effective as the President says all U.S. will be out of Cambodia in a few days. XO Mike SULDO, who just made AHAC is kept busy as Assistant Maintenance Officer and Weapons Officer. Really, most of Mike's time is spent reading PACEX catalogs and buying all those things everyone doesn't need.
With old timers AT3 Tom OLBY and ADJ3 Robert CHRISTENSEN on leave and ADJ3 DECKER on R&R, the remaining crewmen have taken up the slack by working 96 hours on and 24 hours off rotations. Honestly, men, we have requested help, but in the meantime a "Well Done" and sincere thanks go to AMS1 Bill "Old Man" WHITE (who literally missed a scramble with his pants down), ADJ3 Bill "Blondie" BROOKSHIRE, AE3Denny STALLINGS, ADJ3 TIMOTHY (who covered his pilots with his door mounted .45 pistol when all other weapons were down), and AO2 Bill "Ketsup" JESSUP whose timely return from R&R really relieved the shortage of manpower pressure placed on the detachment. We were glad to see him but sorry to hear that he had a bad case of the flu while on R&R in Japan.
Det One has six new persons for it's center fold. They include LTJG Mike LAGOW who came to us from the Binh Thuy Maintenance Department and will fill the same post for the det, along with being the Crew Division Officer.
As a result of the heavy work load, Det One was given a third helo, but it turned out to n=be a big "green" elephant and didn't last long.
The det was provided with additional pilots and crewmen which we needed. Det Two from Nha Be, tightened up it's belt a little and gave us the additional bird and three pilots and crewman/gunner E3 QUINN. The pilots that are now LST qualified are: LTJG Edward "Ted" DOOLIN, who is helping in operations and also brought with him some good Acey Ducey tactics: LTJG Craig "Voss" VOSSETEIG, who in addition to playing A/D, helps out in maintenance. The det also received two additional crewmen from Binh Thuy. They are AMSC B. REYNA, who will take over as "straw boss" ans AE2 COBSON. The det hated to say goodby to AE3 Denny STALLINGS and ADJ3 George DECKER. Best wished and thank you for a job well done!
Our boss, CDR SCHMITT, just returned from an exciting and enjoyable R&R with his wife in Hawaii. This reporter only wants to report the facts, but the pictures he had showed the CDR with two beautiful women, one blonde and one brunette. Maybe they were sisters? Possibly a mother daughter routine? LTJG Russ HALLAUER is now in Hawaii with his wife and new son.
Hearing the familiar "Scramble the Seawolves," Det One's correspondent will be signing off now in order to cover and report this, and future Det One missions which you may read in our next Wolf gram.
Detachment Two
(Nha Be)
The advent of the rainy season finds Detachment Two as busy as ever in their Rung Sat Special Zone surroundings. May's activities were highlighted by CAPT TWITE's orientation visit and awards ceremony. Receiving their first Strike/Flight Air Medals were LTJG's Joe COOK, Dave RUCKER, Curt FRANDSEN, Bill FELTNER, Jim NELLIS, and Ted DOLLIN. LTJG Charlie FOWINKLE, who had just reported aboard from Binh Thuy, also received his first Air Medal the first day on det. CDR "Iron Mike" ASTUSO has taken over as reigning detachment Acey Ducey champion. That, along with his midnight scramble Italian Sonatas on his guitar, make him the most versatile OinC Det Two has seen in quite a while.
In May, Det Two Alpha departed for clandestine operations along the Cambodian Border under the guidance of LCDR "Ski" WOLNIEWICZ. LTJG John WRIGHT's departure was compensated for by LTJG Don DOWNING making Fire Team Leader. CAPT TWITE returned in June for a few days flying with us. Can't wait to see the looks on certain faces when he shows up wearing the set of camouflage greens presented to him by the det. LTJG Larry WOOD and "Boot" LT Clint DAVIE round out the bulk of FTLs. In the rest (R) and recuperation (R) field, Dave RUCKER claims he needs some , this time in country. Seems he met his wife in Hawaii, was back in Nha Be eight hours, went to Binh Thuy for an AHAC check ride, then with LTJG Craig VOSSETEIG and ADJAN SLAWKO, departed for their Jungle Environment Survival Training (JEST) school in the Philippines. He returned eight days later looking for the worse for wear. LTJG's Al YATES and Curt FRANDSEN spent a joint R&R in Hong Kong and returned broke, but laden with gifts. Now that LCDR WOLNIEWICZ, has departed for HC-5, LT Roger EK has taken over as Assistant OinC, Stan and Safety Officer. VN Crosses of Gallantry were presented to LCDR WOLNIEWICZ, LT EK, LTJG WOOD, and LTJG Gordie PETERSON for their action in pinning down a squad of VC. AOC "Chief" FRAZIER received a well deserved Navy Commendation Medal for his outstanding services to the squadron as Detachment Leading Petty Officer. The Chief has reported to NAS Chase Field, Beeville, Texas, to run the ordinance dump. ADJ1 "Red" FAIRBANKS has assumed dutied of POinC. "Red" and all his hard chargers deserve a well earned hand for their maintenance work on det and the shape they return aircraft to Binh Thuy. (Who ever heard of waxing a whole helicopter?) ADJ3 Mike BOWMAN was more mildly concerned over the arrival of a certain baby in Indiana. The package arrived twenty days past ETA. Stale cigars anyone? Mike has transferred to Det Four in Ben Luc from where he returns sporadically to help out when the occasion warrants. AN BEEMAN has reported to CVT-16, USS Lexington, after his R&R in Tokyo. AN Randy Lindberg came back from Hawaii humming "Those Wedding Bells are Breaking up That Old Gang Of Mine." AMS3 Otto TALLEY finally returned smiling from extension leave in California. AMS3 DONNEL, AMS3 MEEKS, ADJAN SLAWKO all qualified as first gunners in May. Det Two has finally received their first two AEs, AE3 PRYBYLSKI and AE2 Karl PETERS. They should save us a lot of trips to home base for repairs. AMS3 PAULY made second gunner in June and should be a first gunner shortly. The detachment was broken up somewhat when LTJGs PETERSON, VOSSETEIG and DOOLIN took AN QUINN and one aircraft to Seafloat. We know they take along some of their "can do" drive and country club management experience. AN QUINN received a Purple Heart for shrapnel wounds received on a firing mission. ADR3 Larry ROGERS, charter member of the Rung Sat Jet Set, returned from Sydney and is applying for a passport to spend extension leave touring Europe. All the way around the world in eighteen months during his tour in HA(L)-3 should qualify him for the squadron continental traveler. ADJ3 Stanley LEE leaves us soon for seven days in country R&R with his in laws in Saigon. After that he transfers to the First Civilian Division. That about completes the news from our end of the delta this month.
Detachment Four
(Ben Luc)
Greetings from Ben Luc, the big rubber in the Giant Slingshot. Many changes have taken place in the Det Four rogues gallery since the last Wolf gram hit the streets.
Those brutally forced to leave the comforts of Vietnam for the uncertainties of CONUS include LTJG Harvey CAUGHEY, ADJ1 BRODERICK, ADJ2 "Van" VANDERFORD, AO2 "Moonbeam" McSWAIN, And ADJAN "Shoot-em-up" GOLDBIN. Arrivals to the tropical paradise are LTJG Pete BUELOW, LTJG Tom "Slick" HAYES, ADR3 Mike BOWMAN, ADR3 "Zorro" ZAEOGOZA and AE3 Rich MACE, all Binh Thuy rejects.
LTJG Bill BELTZ has discovered out here on the farm team and when he comes back from Sydney, he will report to Binh Thuy to work out with the first team. LTJG Chuck "Carlos" STEHLE has gone through test pilot school recently and now mutters about topping and watches Roger Ramjet. AMS1 Bill RUDDICK has also been awarded a scholarship to the Binh Thuy School of QA and Dance, and now spot checks anything that moves.
Last, but certainly not least, the ever popular "Mama Sam" continues to look after her boys and stocks up for the US pullout.
Detachment Five
(Aboard YRBM-20 on the Bassac River near Chau Doc)
Things are moving right along out on Det Five. We've become alternately "The scourge of the Bassac" then "The courge of the Mekong" as the Cambodian situation required. We've been bounced back and forth between YRBM-16 and YRBM-20 like a ping pong ball. If any of the dets need assistance on any move, great or small, just call Mayflower 5.
Aye, bejabbers, lads, a dark cloud hange over Det Five as LTJG Jim TOONE packs his bags for that big taxi service in the sky (Binh Thuy). We'll all miss our spiritual leader, but our loss is the Binh Thuy Officer Club's gain.
Our original challenge was never printed, so we'll repeat it. LTJG Ben FRANKLIN (III), will pay $20 to any detachment with a shorter pilot. We can't advertise his measurements, but someone five feet and a little over is tall! We believe Ben is the shortest in the Navy.
Det Five has seen a big turnover in gunners. A hearty farewell to ABH3 KIDD, and the two "Gold Dust" twins, PR3 FLYNN and ADJ3 DORSEY, all of whom are departing for home. We'll miss AMS1 SHIELDS and ADJ2 BAUER, gold bricking it in Binh Thuy. Det Five also welcomes aboard AT1 GREGORY, AEAN PAGAN, SN FANELLO, and AN HAMMER. Oh yes, for those of you who haven't seen LTJG Rick FRENCH around Binh Thuy, he's making movies out on Det Five along with Carlo ISSI, Cecil KRULIS, and a cast of hundreds!
Detachment Six
(Aboard the LST Jennings County near Song Ong Doc)
Greetings from glamorous Det Six, situated in scenic, elegant Breeze Cove. Recently, the ambitious Seawolves of Det Six have added to the rustic beauty of the Song Ong Doc Bay area with the erection of two Asian style hootches. The splendor of the two original design homes is accentuated by a beautiful rough hewn wooden walkway, which extends from the Seawolves' doorstep to their deluxe PSP landing pad. The Wolves expect to install their own private POL by mid July.
Since the last Wolf gram report, two new gunners have been initiated into the exclusive Det Six society, Danny L STOKES and Homer E TIPTON. With the addition of STOKES, (who incident plays the guitar and sings), this det has certainly developed an appreciation for country and western music. Dan has unselfishly devoted many hours to entertaining the gunners and pilots of Det Six with his golden voice and nimble fingers.
Some recent achievements by Det Six personnel include the following: Joe RAMOS was presented with his Crew Chief Certificate last month. An effective patrol led by LTJG Bob WOLFE destroyed 17 enemy structures in a single strike. Other members of the crew were LTJG "Flamboyant" FLYNN, LTJG Bob GODDARD and LTJG Bill Pederson, and gunners Dave GERGON, Bill FLARIDA, Joe RAMOS, and HE TIPTON. The next day this same crew tallied 20 KBA (body count) when they scrambled to support troops in enemy contact. Last but not least was awarding the Navy Unit Commendation Medal to LTJGs Dick BLAIR, Bob FLYNN, and Bob GODDARD for their heroic action during Hurricane Camille while still student aviators in Pensacola. Their indifference and cool headedness in the face of such impending and threatening disaster is a real tribute to their nonchalant way of handing danger. I think the total of their individual efforts was accurately summed up by Dick BLAIR, who came forth as a spokesman for the group and said, "It was nothing really."
A recent departure from Det Six is LTJG Tom "Tee-Tee" WECKWORTH. He is in the United States now enjoying the comforts of home, but Tom may be back on this side of the world with HC-1 before long.
Detachment Seven
(Ben Luc)
AS the month of June came swiftly to an end, Det Seven's nomadic warriors celebrated it's sixth month in SVN's version of Pensacola Beach, beautiful downtown Ben Luc. It could also qualify as the biggest sand trap on the Ho Chi Minh Open.
Since the last installment of the news, views, and how do you do's, Det Seven has been raising "hail and farewell" from Bun Luc to Binh Thuy. On the "Heavy " side of the news, LCDR Bob REDMAN has officially taken the reigns of Det Seven and now leads 'Tonto's Rangers" across the delta on their nightly patrols. Welcome aboard, Commander. We said goodbye to LCDR Lee EWERT, who's bound for the land of the great gold stripe marching on the banks of the SEVERN (US Naval Academy). LT Howie CLARK has stepped aboard to fill the helmet box of Seawolf 75, and reports that slicks (SEALORDS) are really for kids. A couple of the old timers LTJG Frank PINEGAR and LTJG Pat STAEHELI have departed for HC-7. We'll miss Franks expert boxing lessons and Pats erudite and liberal outlook on the problems of life.
LT Norm HICKS, our intrepid operations advisor, is still talking about his vacation at the Subic Bay Jungle Survival School and JEST-ingly remarks "survival can really be tough in downtown Olongapo." We've renamed the Parrot's Beak in honor of our newest AHAC LTJG Jay PATE. Jay says, " I resemble that remark!" LTJG Mike BRINK has accumulated boo-coo war stories and now returns to Binh Thuy to finish his time in country.
LTJG Sam FEOLA and LTJG Keith WHITE, our maintenance officers, have been working many hours with the crew to maintain our antique UH-1Bs in flying status often with the precision of a surgeon.
A couple of "newbies" on det, LTJG Terry Anderson and LTJG Denny Holmes are keeping the rest of the crew jumping, trying to keep Terry informed and to avoid Denny's darts, a game acquired during his stay at Binh Thuy.
There have been a few personnel changes among Det Seven's gunners who, by the way, enjoy a closer view of the beach than do the officers. We would like to bid farewell to AN Paul WILLINGHAM and AN Adrian CARR who have headed back to reap the joys of stateside living. Our former POinC, Chief ROZELLE, has returned to Binh Thuy for his last few days before also returning to the land of milk and honey. His replacement is AOC OSTERBERG from the ordinance shop. If he does as well with the sixty as he allegedly does in skeet shooting competition, Charlie will have very few places to hide throughout the delta.
AMH2 John ORTH, out training petty officer, is still patting himself on the back for extending over here for six months to get a six months cut, thus missing out on a years cut. AO3 Dave SMALE still reigns as the undefeated Monopoly champ. Of course, being a shrewd business man he never plays unless everyone else has been drinking but himself. AE3 Larry GENTZ and ADJ3 Terry "Red" WINDNAGEL have finally completed their door mounted minigun and have it working beautifully. Perhaps GENTZ can now give the electrical circuits in his head a rest. ADJ3 Bob CARR, one of the dets maintenance experts, is definitely the dets sleeping expert. He and Rip Van Winkle would have been close friends. AMS3 Bob RODERICK never ceases to amaze everyone, especially CARR, with his abundance of energy as he constantly is jumping up to do one kind of dance or another. ADJAN Terry STRACHEN is serving the det in a dual capacity as gunner and resident bartender. He is of such quality that he may attain professional status in the future.
Well, that's about it for now, time for another training hop.
Detachment Eight
(Rach Gia)
Det Eight is finally situated in it's new villa in Rach Gia. After somewhat more than average moving pains, it's a relief to everyone to finally have some of the comforts of home again.
Downstairs is Findlays Bar run by LTJG Gary FINDLAY. It's the best in town. We've found our neighbors very congenial and many people here in town, Vietnamese and American, have gone out of their way to make us welcome.
Since the last news was printed, most of the det personnel have changed. LCDR WEBER has taken over the OinC job from LCDR THOMAS, who has moved to Binh Thuy to become the Training Officer. LTJG Frank BUTLER, the last plank member of Det Eight, has gone via circuitous travel to HS-10 in San Diego. The Assistant OinC billet is now held by LT Mike HOWE. Adjustments were made down the line, and we are happy to welcome aboard our newest "O", Ronnie CHITTY, AMH3 Lash L'HEUREUX and our latest crewmember, ADJ3 WEST. WE were sorry to see some of our old reliables leave, but none of them seemed bitter about going home.
LCDR WEBER has now moved up to FTL, as has LTJG Marty REED. Marty will pin on Lieutenant bars as soon as the paperwork gets through. LTJG Jim CURTIS moved up to AHAC along with LTJG Kevin DELANEY so a new team is pretty well set, and everyone's R&R plans are looking bright for the next couple of months.
LTJG Curtis and AN FARLEY managed to survive survival school with only minor after effects. A couple of cups of coffee and a few aspirins, and they were ready to go again. Jim CURTIS spent a little in country R&R in Binh Thuy learning the techniques of test piloting and is now again with the warriors.
That's about the extent of the news. All are welcome at the Rach Gia Wolf Den, so if you happen by our way, please stop in!
Detachment Nine
(Aboard YRBM-21 near An Long)
Since the last Wolf gram, Det Nine has had a big turnover in personnel. The only man in HA(L)-3 authorized to wear a War of 1812 Campaign Medal is LCDR "Uncle Mel" ADEN, has left as out OinC to go into Binh Thuy as Assistant Maintenance Officer. Mr. ADEN, pretty soon all your JG's from det will make your life a little brighter. As our new OinC we will have LCDR Hugh WYNN, straight from the HA(L)-3 Safety Office. LT Jim McCALLUM, our favorite ol' Georgia boy, left in May to go to school in Monterey. Leaving with him was LTJG Larry CRUME. Larry got his orders to HC-2 in Lakehurst, New Jersey. Det Nine's mascot, LTJG "Gentle" Ben FRANKLIN, was transferred to Det Five. It's not quite the same without our favorite Teddy Bear. LTJG Phil CANTER has arrived at the YRBM-21 after serving his six months sentence in "Binh Phoey" as the Assistant Safety Officer. When the Cambodian Operation started, we had a lot of visitors come out our way to fly with us. LTJG Jack "Duck" LUDWIG was with us for a few weeks. We showed him how the real war was fought so he could go back to Seafloat and explain it to their personnel. Along with Jack, LCDR Vic BECK stopped in for a few weeks. He brought along his usual aura of gracious charm, genteel deportment, and hundreds of questionable jokes and stories. We had quite a few good parties while our guests were here and we all learned a lot from them. Jack LUDWIG told us pseudo-war stories about Seafloat while CDR DUKES and LCDR BECK sat around and sang World War II songs. A sad day in the life of Det Nine took place when the heartless Navy took LTJG Mike "Moe" O'HEARN away from us. Mike has been on Det Nine since September and is the last plank owner left. As Det Nine's recruiter for the IRA and chairman of the Free Burnadette Devlin League, his alcohol inspired, inflammatory oratory against the enemies of the Emerald Isle has convinced most of us to go to Ireland and help man the barricades. LTJG Ram "Mr Warmth" HAWLEY made AHAC and nobody's heard the end of it yet. LTJG Jack HOGAN, the bronzed god of the Barrier Reef, made AHAC, too. Both Ram and Jack go on R&R in Hawaii sometime in late July or early August. The det will be hard pressed to get by without the two good humor men. LTJG Tim WRIGHT made AHAC in June. Yes Virginia, there must be a Santa Claus. LT Terry CAMPBELL, out OinC, still maintains his easy going southern way of life. He doesn't get excited about anything. All he does is sit up on the flight deck in his white linen suit, underneath a cabana, sipping his mint julep and talking about the old days down home. LTJG "Easy" Ed DYER, Nebraska's Chamber of Commerce representative to Det Nine, is still alive and well. Anyway, we think he is. The only time we ever see old "Deadwood" is when he finally gets out of the sack to go up to sick bay to get his bed sore medicine.
There has been quite a change over in gunner personnel on Det Nine, since the last Wolf gram. During the last few months we have been able to catch a couple quick glances of AO1 NESBY in between R&R's and leave. Rumor has it that he is due to pay us another visit around the end of the month. ATN2 DIAL keeps babbling something about living in Taipei ASAP. Something to do with the shrimp, I believe. WEAVER has been running around complaining about his teeth. We think that he is starting to cut more teeth. No one has been able to talk to AE3 HOGAN. Apparently he is saving all conversation for his wife on R&R in Hawaii. Clarence WILLIAMS is back home after a four month visit in the world. He has decided to homestead in a split level hootch on the Mekong. AMSAN ELY, having just arrived from Binh Thuy Training Facility, has already spread around a lot of his knowledge. For example, when told to blow out the static ports, he immediately went to the front of the aircraft and blew out the pitot tube. On the following day, after cleaning his gun he promptly managed to put a round through the deck. Of course, it went all the way through the deck, through the wardroom overhead and deposited shrapnel and insulation into LTJG DYER's table setting. And now for the other newbie, ADJAN PERRY. While flying left seat one evening, he was struck by an unidentified op-rod, leaving deep gashes in the back of his helmet. Last of all, CHESTER. CHESTER has finally decided to leave the luxury cruiser, YRBM-21, in exchange for the laird at Binh Thuy. That's about all from Hugh's Floating Funny Farm.
Administration
Since the last edition of the Wolf gram, the Administration Department has undergone a complete changing of the guard, so to speak. CDR STRANGE has relieved CDR SCHMITT as Admin Officer, LCDR DANIELS, passing through enroute to Det Six, is the new Assistant Admin Officer, relieving LT CLARK who is mow AOinC of Det Seven. LTJG Rick FENN is the ESO, LTJG Kirk TODD took over as the First Lieutenant, LTJG Tim ZIEMER has relieved Rick FRENCH as PAO, LTJG Mike McNAULL is now Awards Officer and finally LT Bob (Clarence Darrow) JOHNWICK has relieved LT Steve SANDBERG as Legal Beagle.
The office personnel continues to perform admirably. Congratulations are in order for YN3 MARTINEZ as he was promoted on 1 June. YN3 SAUNDERS has now joined the office staff and has already started pulling his hair out, as his Ben Xe Moi liberty has been curtailed a little.
Welcome aboard to LCDR Bill ROY, LTJG Tom DAVIS and LTJG Don DOWNING, who are joining the team!
Personnel
As another month draws to a close, many of us here find we are just a little closer to the day when we can return to the States. That day has arrived for PN1 Rayford POOLE, who departed on 10 June 1970.
However, as one leaves so must someone else arrive to take his place. This month we had three new faces added to the staff of the personnel office. On the 24th day of June, PN3 Samuel VIEYA arrived, followed the next day by PNC David KUNBERGER. ALso arriving this month to fill the position of Assistant Personnel Officer was LTJG Bill GILBERT.
These new people along with the old staff, have been turning out the work of our personnel office at a steady volume, and, as the work goes on, we look forward to seeing you again next month in the Wolf gram.
Operations
AS the "nerve center" for SEALORD and to some extent Seawolf activities, Operations sees many arrivals and departures. In recent weeks, ops has picked up a new Assistant Operations Officer, CDR Scott MUNRO, and a new Flight Officer, LT Jim PETROVICH, both of which have come from the homeland. Scott and Jim are welcome additions to our burgeoning staff.
CDR WETZEL, chief operator of our crew, is beginning to feel the call of the Islands. With R&R in sight and rotation coming in September, he is feeling more than short. LCDR Vic BECK is under the influence of a similar malady, as he is also up for R&R in July and rotation within the next few months.
LTJG D Ronnie DUNN, our Schedules Officer, has been cited for his effective appeasement of eager JO's demanding that precious flight time. And if Ronnie can't handle all the red, white, and blue barons, he sends them to his assistant, LTJG Carl NELSON, Man Mountian in residence, whence all complaints cease!
Out Intelligence Officer, LTJG Rick LAUSTEN, has just returned from RPS school in Danang bringing with him qualifications not only to handle our mystic and occult publications, but also to comment on the aesthetic benefits of sunbathing.
Flight Logs and Records under the nonchalant direction of LTJG Jim CHURCH has been compiling endless amounts of statistics to substantiate for the non believers the extent of the SEALORD and SEAWOLF operations. Detailed reports of morning , afternoon and evening landings, hard or otherwise, are available from Jim, for a small fee of course. Soon to succeed Jim is LTJG Bob GANNON, the thin man from California. Charged with reviewing out base defense program, LTJG Bob PEARSON can be found touring the perimeter on foot. Not that he can't drive, it's just that they won't let him, something about a Vietnamese bus moving at 40 mph in reverse!
LCDR Chris THOMAS is getting short and appears to be heading for HS-5. In spite of attempts to keep him off the sandlot, Mr Thomas has proven to be HA(L)-3's answer to Maury WILLS...blinding speed and lots of color. Between hard landings and hard knocks on the diamond, he has maintained his quiet manner and characteristic good humor. LTJG Bill McCAMY fresh out of R&R and sporting the latest in Micronesian love beads, is counting the hours until he must leave our secret paradise. Not to be undone by anyone else's Vietnamization, LTJG Mitch BROWN is attempting to make "helo drivers" out of our four Vietnamese guests.
AMS1 HICKS is stepping into AO1 REICHART's spot as head flight skinner, which is somewhat akin to mule skinner. REICHART is leaving after doing an outstanding job. AN DAVIS has replaced YN3 SAUNDERS as the dyry typest in the training office.
Chief WARRINER has ventured into the business world with the operation of his cold drink concession. AE3 LORENZ recently released from R&R in Australia, has generously beautified Operations with his stereo console. ATN3 "EV" EVANS has been slated for starring regularly on the ops volleyball team. What he lacks in height will be compensated for by his exceptional agility. Time passes quickly in Operations with AMS3 BRYANT and AMS3 SHULTZ telling war stories of their recent heroics while out on Det Nine. Communications has a change of command with SN FREAUFF replacing CYN3 BLIESNER. "Big Daddy" BLIESNER will soon be seen of late in the vicinity of the communications trailer wearing a trench coat and carrying his briefcase full of secret messages.
As a rather large department, Operations has it's share of headaches, such being the usual fare under the circumstances. But the heartening point of it all is that we get the job done, which is what we are all here for anyway. See you next Wolf gram!
Line
As of this date the line division is still intact, thanks to the help of a few old salts.
LTJG MANGENE is still in a state of shock after narrowly missing his chance for det life. LTJG KITCHEN went to Aircraft Division, and for awhile, all was peace and quiet until our newest "newbie," LTJG COLLINS replaced him. However, Mr COLLINS was last seen with broom in hand sweeping out the FOD in the revetments and on the line. Now that's news!
We have a dozen "newbies" on the line and AE3 ROGERS is losing his hair trying to keep them occupied. Our poor newbies haven't met out lovable Chief BARTON yet because he is on leave. I'm not sure who will be going into shock first when he returns, the Chief or the newbies.
After much debating with Chief BARTON, AS1 SIMPSON is finally getting to fly, in fact so much we never see him. AE3 RING and ADJ3 TUTHILL are so short we very seldom see them anymore either.
That's about it for the latest gossip on the line this month. Also, contrary to popular belief, a shuffleboard does not exist in the line shack (we do have a dart board, no pictures on it though).
AO Shop
AOCS PATCH, new arrival to the ordinance shop has recently replaced AOC OSTERBURG, who was transferred to Det Seven. Good luck Det Seven, but in second thought, good luck to the AO shop.
Since the acquisition of LT "Janice" JOPLIN, the AO Shop has been mustering and mustering, and mustering and....
It looks as though AOAN MANDOSKE will be receiving the "1970 Flight Time Hog" award from the AO Shop, hands down. We have recently acquired AOAN "Baby Face" KLASSEN, who has completely reorganized the minigun locker with a new book entitled "One Hundred Ways to Build a Minigun."
The old salts welcome the following newbies to the shop, AOAN NEHL, AOAN NAGLE, AOAN GRAFF, AOAN MISE, AO3 LANDY, AOAN PURINGTON, and AO3 HAYNES. From us to you newbies we have but one thing to say, "you've got it."
The AO Shop also welcomes a new turn pilot, AO3 PANINSKI who turned his first aircraft on the hangar deck during a not so normal post PE check. A fond farewell is bid to AO3 BESKOSTY, AO3 LEE, AO3 SKELTON, and AO3 WARIN, all of whom have received orders to Quonset Point, Rhode Island.
For the love of the land and people, the following personnel have received six month extensions with the AO Shop, AO3 WILEY, AO3 HUGHES, and AO3 PARKS.
Quality Assurance
We have been so busy that we missed last month's Wolf gram, but we are here in all our glory this month. As you know, we are led by the distinguished division officer "Flash Gordon" of comic book fame. Many people have tried to corral him, but you'd best get on the fox mike if you really want to talk with him. AMSC BOYER, on last writing, had just picked up the ball and is running with it. The question is, where's he going?
With regrets, we have had to say goodby to ADJC LICHTENBERGER, AT1 DOHVE, AO1 HUBLEY, ADJ2 AIRSMAN and AMH2 COOK. Now we have ADJC CLARK and AO1 TOGNONI fighting over who gets to wear the next "badge". Chief CLARK keeps saying, "How about a little slack, guys."
We welcome back ADJC GERSTER from Personal Response, where he found that all was not a bed of roses. He is just as pudgy now as when he left, but along with it he brings that jolly note we all need. We have a newbie in AMHC OAKES coming to us with previous helo experience, working along with ADJC HUFFMAN. These men provide real potential in our happy little midst.
Boy size sailor AMS1 HICKS and AMSC JODRY are still the stalwart members on our night crews. They are taking turns bouncing around AMS2 GRIMSLED, who just joined our group. All in all, we have tried to make everyone happy, but in the future, will strive even more for better aircraft. So until the next writing, hang loose!
Aircraft Division
Since the last Wolf gram, the aircraft division has received a few new personnel. LT GOODRICH has taken over as division officer with LTJG KITCHEN acting as his assistant. We also welcome AMS1 HAYDEN, AMH1 CLAUNCH, AMS3 ARNOLD, AMH3 MEATS, and AMSAN LEFORT.
Chief HOPKINS has added to his duties by becoming the division chief. He still stops by airframes frequently to keep his supervisory status current. AMS1 PHILLIPS has to purchase new uniforms having recently made chief. He still hasn't recovered from his initiation, but seems to be holding his own.
Departing beautiful Binh Thuy, we have AMH1 MENDOZA, ADJ2 WALKER, and ADJ2 HARRIS, MENDOZA is bound for the great state of Alaska, and WALKER is going to Norfolk, Va, for duty on the beach. HARRIS is leaving the Navy for civilian life.
During the next month, airframes is losing eleven people so the shop will be a little bare for the next Wolf gram. To those leaving, we extend our best wishes and a job well done!
AT Shop
Here we are in the month of June and with it we find our old timers turning into short timers. ATN2 HORN will be leaving us for the world on the 4th of July, followed thereafter by ATN2 LOVIN, and ATC BOWMAN. We wish all three men good luck in their new duty stations.
With these departures in mind, we would like to extend a hardy "Welcome Aboard" to ATC MATTOT, who arrived from NAF Andrews AFB, ATN3 COOK from HS-10 Imperial Beach, ATN3 LIDDLE from Nestef, Maryland, ATAN STEINMAN from VA-22, MADRID from NAS LEMOORE, and ATAN MURPHY and ATAN MILLER NATTC Memphis, Tennessee. We have a program established that will have everyone checked out and ready to go by the end of the month. This and our regular maintenance is keeping all hands occupied, making the time pass more rapidly.
The AE Shop reports everything "same-same" this months was last month.
Material Control
The movement of personnel in and out of the maintenance/Material Control Division has been as fast as the shifting of aircraft status from up to down. CWO2 HOCKENBERRY retired from the Navy and relinquished his command of material to leap back to the states shortly after AZ1 WALLACE, AZ2 MILLER, AMS2 COHERN, and AT2 BRADEN ended their tours away from home. Material Control found that the office required rearranging once AKC TURNER, AK3 AKIN and AK3 BROOKS arrived. The Tool Room's expansion into new quarters found AMS3 SOTO and his assistants, AN SEAMAN, ADJAN DANER and AMH3 ZIRNHELD, busily at work finding the proper places for the tools. The shifting of AK2 REMMICK to Night Check Crew and AK3 HAMLEY to Midcheck keeps an orderly flow of parts into the squadron. AK3 TRAMADEO is on a couple months of R&R and Vinh Long, while acting as the Navy Liaison instead of AK2 BELL, who has moved back to Binh Thuy. AK1 BROWN moved to FASU Supply and has helped increase the aircraft availability, but he is now getting ready to head back to the states.
Maintenance Control has been honored with the arrival of LT McGEE, LT SPEIDEL, AFCM RAND, AMSC PRINCE, AZ3 HORNER, AOAN SEMMIL and ADR3 GORTON. Chief Rand tried to leave country early, but after a short hospitalization, he returned with enthusiasm to his Maintenance Control Chief billet. People now under 100 days to go are AK1 BROWN, AZ2 DANES, AE3 WITT, and LCDR WILLETTS. In this helo squadron the days just seem to "fly by."
The reassignment of aircraft to det or to Binh Thuy, coupled with the repair of aircraft, keeps the division jumping and under a never ending flow of paperwork. The workload is eased through the performance of Chief's WICKS and MEYERS, and AZ3 HASSLER.
Maintenance
As this month started we saw CDR EHL leave his post as Maintenance Officer being relieved by CDR Carson, former OinC of Det One. About the same time the vacant spot of Assistant Maintenance Officer was filled by LCDR ADEN, coming to us from Det Nine, where he served as OinC. With both positions filled, the wheels of progress have picked up momentum. LCDR ADEN was given the assignment of senior officer of the Aircraft Accident Board after the regretful incident of losing SEALORD 1. The office welcomes the new face of AOAN JOHNSON, a newcomer from conus. CDR CARSON is just returning from R&R as we go to press.
