| Saturday, November 6th - MAGNOLIA PLANTATION - GARDENS/TRAM & HOUSE TOUR (9am departure) |
| This tour is a 3 part tour and is specifically designed for all that won't be attending the Business Meeting. While our "Seawolves" are attending their Business Meeting we will be departing the hotel at approximately 9am on a deluxe motorcoach headed to one of the most beautiful romantic plantations in the world.
Prior to the War Between the States the Rev. John Drayton turned this Cypress Swamp into a wonderland. The GARDENS at Magnolia Plantation are of such beauty and variety that they have brought tourists from around the world to view them since they were open to the public in the early 1870s. Many parts of the gardens are much older, some sections more than 325 years old, making them the oldest gardens in America. You will see various varieties of flowers from camellias, daffodils, to azaleas and countless other species in bloom year round, with the climax of incredible beauty building towards the spring bloom. As you stroll the garden paths the beauty of these unique gardens will take your breath away.
After touring the gardens you will board a TRAM, which will take you into part of the Audubon Swamp Garden, home to scores of water loving creatures. Here you will experience history and wildlife on this action-packed tram tour of the plantation's wetlands, lakes, forests, and marshes. Naturalist guides help you spot alligators, turtles, egrets, and herons in native habitats. With more than 600 acres of wildlife habitats and gardens, the nature train allows you to view a large portion of these wonderful areas in an entertaining and educational way.
HOUSE ... You will step back in time with a half-hour guided tour of the Drayton family home, the third to grace the site in more than three centuries of Drayton family occupation. The current main House - the core of which was built prior to the Revolutionary War near Summerville, South Carolina and floated down the Ashley River to Magnolia after the Civil War - gives a glimpse of plantation life in the 19th century and beyond.
Ten rooms are open to the public, furnished with early-American antiques, porcelain, quilts, including some Drayton family heirlooms since Drayton Hastie, the late owner, purchased some of the furniture from Sotheby's several years ago when he added the piazzas to the house. Guides describe life in the 19th century, using furniture and household objects to bring plantation culture alive.
You will arrive back at the hotel at approximately 1:00pm. The cost of this tour may seem costly but, it is worth the price to experience this beauty first hand. Cost: $37.00 per person |
